"Company retirement plans come in two flavors–defined benefit..." That's an interesting way of putting it, but I certainly agree. I appreciate the amount of detail that you've gone into explaining this as well! I had no idea that if an employee leaves a company after 2 years, he would get 20% of what the company had contributed for him and leave the rest behind. I'm going to have to really look into my retirement plans and see what my company offers.

This a very important issue for every individual to concentrate on. One must know what retirement plan he is up to and what benefits one can deprive from it. Companies retirement plan should be careful understood and then applied otherwise one may have to just repent.

Defined benefit plans are not offered by many companies anymore. Companies lost money on them for years now so only federal and state employess have something like that now. Most plans no matter what they are called are just a retirement investment like a ira but they do have some advantages with company matching and tax advantages.

Everyone should make sure to check what thier retirement plan is invested in. Sometimes they have funds that do not produce much income or gains. Even when you retire you still need the plan to produce income or gains so you do not run out of money. I like corporate bonds right now for some good income
