In my opinion you need to get recommendation from people you trust the most. A smaller firm option seems to have potential to be more informative and make information available to the investor. At the same time, the investor has to ask more questions and review information to verify accuracy. Its unfortunate how some take advantage of their power as CPA's and financial advisors.

You have to make sure and look at what they invest in. Maddof did this and alot of managers just took clients money and invested with him. No matter who you invest with you must look at what investments they invest in to make sure you get something you want or need. Try to keep cost and fees as low as you can and make sure to have some investments that produce income.
